Isla (One Week Old)

Miss Isla One Week Old...May 25, 2013

Events of Baby Isla's Birth (The Story)

As Events Began......

It was Friday May 17th.  I was getting ready for work FEELING great!!!  We had been taking pictures everyday after our due date passed.

I was LOOKING like a Million Bucks, or so I thought.   Not 10 minutes after I had my picture taken I was telling Maceo that I felt nauseous. Continued to pack my lunch for work, left the house, got in the van, went to turn it on.....RAN OUT OF THE VAN OUT OF THE GARAGE TO THE SIDE AND THREW UP!!!  Yuck....I called my work to let them know I wasn't feeling well.  Called the clinic to see what was going on...and had to wait it out.  I decided as we were waiting that I would just take a nap for a little bit.  When the nap was over it was about lunch time.  So Maceo and I ate something little.  It didn't like me either.  The clinic called FINALLY and said to stay home and take it easy.  So that is just what we did.

That evening I thought everything may have just been something that I had eaten the night before trying to get out of my body.  Then (Sorry for the T.M.I.) EXPLOSIVE diarrhea.  It was definitely not something that I had eaten by this time.  I had done some reading and some people their labor starts with the lovely diarrhea to "flush" out in preparation for baby's arrival.  2 1/2 hours of that I was "Clean" so I told Maceo I needed just to walk around the block (still trying to stay close to home for that "just in case" (fully knowing if that happened I was S.O.L.).

Around 10:30 that evening I had called First Nurse because I knew I was having contractions.  I gave her all my information and was instructed to time my contractions for 2 hours if they were still 5 mins apart to call back.  I tried to take a hot bath, then laid down timing my contractions (Somehow I fell asleep with my phone on my belly as I was timing).  I woke up...I HAD TO PEE!!!

Quickly, I pregnant lady jumped out of the bed and waddled to the bathroom to go.  Something about this was different thou.  I had remembered from one of my friends that if your water broke it just continues to come out.  So I walked to the living room and around the informal dining room (as I am still leaking) trying to call first nurse.  It was about 1:50 am at this time and I had been trying to call first nurse for 10 minutes (F.Y.I. no answer) before I decided to wake Maceo to let him know my water had broke.  He jumped out of bed and was packing the van as I was still trying to get a hold of first nurse.  The lady on the phone of course told us to go to the hospital and that she would let them know we were on our way.

Maceo finished placing the couple of bags that I had in the house.  And I had asked him to grab 2 towels for the drive to the hospital, he looked at me confused but did as I had asked.  It was nice to have something soaking up my water as we were driving to the hospital.  We left the house hoping we didn't forget or need anything else.

As we were driving to the ER (because it was after hours and that is the only door that is unlocked), we both were in shock and awe that we would be going to the hospital as 2 but leaving as 3!!  As we arrived at the hospital I told Maceo we needed to get a picture because we forgot to get one when we left from home.

We made it to the hospital (note, very good idea to wear dark clothing when your water has broke it continues to come out.....)

We were escorted to the 4th Floor of Mary Greeley to Birthways and were checked in to our room.  I had told Maceo that it was my goal to always have a smile on my face and to let anyone know that we were thankful for their assistance.

From about 2:50 am when we were checked in until 9 am we were trying to sleep, but seriously who can sleep with the anticipation that BABY IS ON HER WAY!!!

I just wanted to walk around....seriously who could sleep, knowing your first born is on her way to greet the world.

The chair was the most comfortable place to sit (and sleep)

At 9 am our labor and delivery nurse came in to check how we were progressing with dilating.  I was still only at 1.  Since, we had been at the hospital since just before 3am and with out progressing the nurse said the doctor was going to be suggesting Pitocin.  The doctor came in and did just that.  Shortly after he left I was waiting for something to happen with the Pitocin.  I am so thankful for my husband who was the best as filling my cup with water and ice.

By 2 pm I know something had to have changed a little, I was feeling contractions more not bad, but more than before.  The nurse then checked me I was only dilated to 2!!  Are you serious only 2 I was thinking I have been in the hospital for just over 11 hours....and only to a 2.  Although, my gynecologist did warn me to let me know that I wouldn't dilate as fast or with the progression that most women would have, because I did have to have a procedure a couple of years ago for some pre-cancerous cells in my cervix.  So there was scar tissue left that would keep my cervix tight.  But she did warn that once I started to dilate I would dilate fast!!

With in a little over an hour about 3:25 pm was definitely having some much stronger contractions. Even with trying different positions to feel comfortable.  I liked standing against the bed with someone applying pressure to my lower back.  The labor ball, which was just a medicine ball, was ok too.  I was very appreciative of Maceo being so caring and was watching what the nurse was doing so he could help me with my pain.   He was even on top of making sure my drink was full of water and ice.

I had reached the point where I knew SOMETHING was changing and changing fast!!!  I had asked for some pain management medicine.  The nurse went to get some and I was a little more comfortable after it kicked in.  My contractions were still strong.  When my contractions were at their most uncomfortable peak (I don't know why I did this but I did) I asked Katie, our nurse, how she delivered her 2 boys.  She said she had an epidural.  Another nurse, had walked in to check how things were going-and I asked if I could get into the birthing tub to try to help myself relax (I love water, and I am most comfortable with a short soak if I am in pain).   The other nurse said with Pitocin I couldn't get into the tub.  I was heartbroken,  something then went thru my head....why did I ask Katie how she delivered??  I had gone into this delivery as whatever makes Baby and Mommy Safe.  I took it as a sign and had asked for an epidural.  I said no hurry, with in the hour would be nice.  Even with the contractions and some of the uncomfortable ones I told myself I was going to smile.

Maceo told me to give the thumbs up after I received the epidural.

Not 15 minutes after receiving the epidural.  I was telling the nurses that I had a LOT of pressure below.  I kept trying to relieve the pressure by moving.  The nurse decided to check to see the progression of my dilation.   She called in another nurse, who also checked me and they were calling the doctor.  Her head was beyond ready for me to start pushing.

About 20 minutes into pushing the doctor asked if I could feel him pinching me with tweezers.  No, I couldn't feel it.  Which was good a quick 1 and 2 with a knife he had to cut me down and over into my butt muscle (to prevent tearing in the future).   The fetal heart beat was slowing with every push they needed to help out the process (they even pulled out the vacuum).  After that 5 more minutes and 1 more push.  We had our baby!!!!

The reason we were slowing with the fetal heart beat.  Little miss Isla had a "True knot" in her umbilical cord.  During some point in the growing process throughout the months in utero she had twisted her umbilical cord into a knot.  Our nurse said she had NEVER seen that before.  The doctor said it doesn't happen often.

 The coolest board EVER!!!

Our Daughter

One very proud Daddy

One extremely happy and tired Mommy

The amazing nurse that helped through all the process of my labor  So grateful to know her outside of the hospital.  Maceo and I actually worked with her when we both worked at Younkers for a bit.

What an amazing Gift.  Our daughter is beautiful, healthy, and passed all tests the doctors had for her.  The nurse that took after our labor and delivery Nurse's shift came in and said "There is that miracle baby."  We are beyond THANKFUL for everyone's help in the delivery of our daughter.

Happy 1 Year Of Homeownership

ONE YEAR AGO TODAY!!!

One year ago today I was eagerly awaiting the time scheduled to
"sign our lives away" to this (our first) home!!

Needless to say the process was fast...It was only a week and a half of looking at many houses, before we came to the conclusion THIS was going to be OUR HOME...We bid and closed on the house in just less than a month...with some bumps in between
(due to the mortgage lender not being on top of his game),
but in the end We Have OUR home!!

HUGE Thanks to my parents, Jody and Dean in helping with the moving process especially on being able to get things done and fast
(even with the extremely hot weather)!!

Maceo was deployed overseas-in the Philippines-for work.  His FIRST "in-person" walk thru was July 1, 2012 after I picked him up at the airport when returning home from deployment.  We had been able to do a couple of Skype walk thru's while he was overseas and via e-mail with pictures.

What a difference a year makes!!

Besides celebrating our now 1 year anniversary of being home-owners.

We have also:
Purchased some new home items

Celebrated our wedding with our reception

Found out we were expecting our FIRST CHILD

Celebrated our 1 year  Anniversary of Marriage

Done a little home improvement projects

Welcomed our first child into the family and were able to bring her home from the hospital yesterday!!

Background on our choice for Miss Isla Paige's name....
We didn't want a name that every child in her classes would have especially with having what seems to be the most common last name. We needed to find something that was just a little different (with out being too different).

I remember we were looking, and looking, discussing, and discussing...trying names out-THROWING names out. We came across the name ISLA. Something about it made us fall in love. Could be just how it is slightly exotic but lovely. The name rolled together Isla Anderson perfectly!!

Same went for her middle name of Paige. We were looking, and looking, discussing, and discussing...trying names out-THROWING names out. After we decided on her first name we just needed something that helped flow with both first and last name. It was by chance we came across Paige and we both said YES!!!

We decided that we were not going to name her after any family members and obviously not after any previously dated persons.
